8. STEAM PLANTS
Q. What constitutes an MSM “Steam Plant”?
A. A boiler with burner, a matching engine/s, a refillable gas tank and an oil trap mounted on a tray with edges folded up all round and sealed at the corners. All the components are connected by appropriate piping so that the plant is ready for running as soon as it is received (apart for the necessary filling of tanks, lubrication and tuning of the burner that can only be done at the destination) MSM Steam plants used in a marine situation are designed to give approximately 20 minutes running time before needing maintenance. This involves refilling the boiler and gas tank, draining and refilling the displacement lubricator, applying a light machine oil to all external rubbing surfaces and emptying the oil trap ready for the next run.
